Boston Neighborhood: The South End

Created on landfill, the South End was designed by famed architect Charles Bulfinch who brought his eye for balance to this neighborhood in 1801. But by the 1970s neglect, arson, and demolition had destroyed more than a quarter of the area’s original buildings.
