The City School: Celebrating Change 2012

Thursday, May 31 6:00p
Age Suitability: None Specified

When Alexandria, 17, was asked what she learned at The City School she shared, “How to effectively solve a problem.” This year’s Celebrating Change will commemorate 17 years of young people learning how to solve problems in our communities. From cleaning up an empty lot at 156 Stanwood Street in Uphams Corner, Dorchester to a young man starting a support group for other young men to learn how to mentor one another, The City School has been guiding youth to develop the skills and training to become Boston’s future Community Educators, Organizers and Advocates and Organizational Leaders. This past year, we will celebrate:
Providing 6,080 community service hours to Greater Boston non-profit organizations;
Providing quality, mentored employment to 89 teenagers;
Nurturing a staff made up of 73% graduates of our programming;
Continuing to foster an 87% program participant retention rate;
As well as
Royal Nunes, a graduate and now adult program coordinator being selected into The Philanthropic Initiative’s Boston Neighborhood Fellows Program and;
Remaining the only youth development organization working to build bridges across racial, economic and geographical differences.
Each year we celebrate both the individual and community change by recognizing connecting and building strong communities through leadership development and a commitment to social justice and equity.
AWARDEES At Celebrating Change we also give out, “Big Picture Awards” that are shared with individuals who reflect the vision and values of The City School. Each of our awardees lives and practices our guiding principles centered on social justice through their work and all other parts of their lives. In both large and small ways, the “Big Picture Awardees” are helping to paint a portrait of a more equitable society and world. Awardees will be announced at the end of February.
