Dramatically reducing the nation’s hunger for fossil fuels might lower our impact on the environment and increase energy security. That might not seem remotely feasible. But it is just that kind of mind-bending transformation Amory Lovins, cofounder, chairman, and chief scientist of the Rocky Mountain Institute, has in mind. He believes it is time to take concerted action, and, as RMI puts it, "speed the transformation from pervasive waste to elegant frugality, from causing scarcity by inattention to creating abundance by design, from liquidating energy capital to living better on energy income."
