This talk will place Winslow Homer’s 1865 painting "Pitching Quoits" in the context of the American Civil War and will explore its relevance to viewers today. Melissa Renn will review Homer's career as an illustrator for Harper’s Weekly during the Civil War. Judy Murray will share how this and other paintings in Harvard’s collection of American art have generated discussions about American history and democratic values for immigrant audiences.
