Each month, the Mount Auburn Book Club meets to discuss a selected work related to one of Mount Auburn's many facets. Selections range from books on history, natural history, horticulture, art, architecture, preservation, and wildlife to books written by or about those now buried and commemorated here. The Book Club meets in Story Chapel on the second Thursday of each month. Coffee and tea are provided.
Thursday, July 12: Percival Lowell (memorialized in his family lot on Trefoil Path) was instrumental in the discovery of the planet Pluto; Brian Marsden (interred in Story Chapel Columbarium) was influential in the eventual demotion of Pluto to a 'dwarf planet.' In Neil deGrasse Tyson's The Pluto Files: The Rise and Fall of America's Favorite Planet (2009) we will learn the history of this controversial celestial body.
