Music and Islam: Sonic Dimensions of Piety, Politics, and Pleasure

This symposium will provide global perspectives on the diversity of musical practices in the world of Islam and how they are situated within local political, historical, religious, sociocultural, & aesthetic contexts, challenging monolithic interpretations of Islam within a forum for understanding the multiple and complex forces that shape/are shaped by musical expression. Martin Stokes (Oxford University), 2011 Royal Musical Association's Dent Medal recipient, will deliver the keynote address.
