Each year millions of birds of prey migrate north in the spring to their breeding grounds in the United States and Canada. Of those millions of hawks, thousands migrate through Massachusetts and New England. While a large part of this movement is through the central portion of the state, there is also a significant coastal movement in the spring, and Plum Island is one of the best locations from which to observe these migrating raptors.
Join Craig Jackson of Eastern Massachusetts Hawk Watch for an introduction to hawk watching in eastern Massachusetts and the northeastern United States. You'll see the video, "Looking Skyward - A Passion for Hawk Watching," and hear about tips on raptor identification as well as on where and when to watch birds of prey as they migrate. The morning program concludes with a live American kestrel demonstration and a short presentation, Kestrels and Cranberries, by Joey Mason.
After the program, join us for a free field trip on Plum Island's Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. For additional information on Eastern Massachusetts Hawk Watch, please visit the web site at www.massbird.org/EMHW.
