"The Plains Across: The Overland Emigrants and the Trans-Mississippi West: 1840-60" by John Unruh Jr. From newspaper reports, letters & diaries, Unruh explores why emigrants undertook the arduous journey to establish a life West. Washington Post Book Review wrote: "the best book yet written on the overland journey...it might have come from the pen of a best-selling popularizer."
