On Tuesday, March 24, Stop & Shop will welcome customers to the Boston area’s first “affordable food summit” at its Quincy location on 65 Newport Avenue. The summit provides an opportunity for local families to meet with community experts, including MassINC* Research Director Dana Ansel, Ph.D., nationally acclaimed parenting expert and CEO of Mom Central Stacy DeBroff, Stop & Shop’s Manager of Health & Wellness Paulette Thompson, MS, RD, LN, and Stop & Shop Consumer Advisor Andrea Astrachan to:
• Discuss the impact of rising food costs and the condition of the local economy
• Receive advice for creating healthy, affordable meals on a budget
• Sample healthy, affordable meal ideas
• Learn more about eating right and decoding nutrition labels
• Participate in a store tour to learn how to shop smart and save money through the aisles
“The average family of four spends $709 on groceries a month ($8,513 per year),” said Andrea Astrachan, consumer advisor for Stop & Shop. “We have the responsibility to support our customers and provide them with information to simplify their shopping experience. By providing fresh tips and advice, our affordable food summits teach customers how to save money without compromising quality.”
According to the Producer Price Index in a year-over-year comparison, prices for consumer foods have increased by 8.7 percent, the largest gain since 1981. Stop & Shop’s affordable food summit comes on the heels of its introduction of Healthy Ideas, its new [on-shelf] symbol to help customers easily identify foods that are healthy.
