Printmaking: Screen Printing 1

Description:
In this inaugural class in the Asylum's new screen printing studio, students will cover all the basics of this popular type of printmaking. After an overview of the printing process, students get hands-on experience with art preparation, simple DIY screens, emulsion and exposure, inks, registration, and printing multi-color projects. Students will learn about printing on different materials, from paper to wood and fabrics, and students will have a chance to prepare and create screens for their own projects. We'll also cover the principles of shop maintenance and cleanup, to make sure we keep this new studio in top condition.
Class Goals:
Students will develop an understanding of the print process as well as the skills to print their own projects. Students will help to print a 2 color T-shirt for the Asylum staff and members and a single color Artisan's Asylum poster for an upcoming event. Each student will receive a T-shirt and poster to take home with them as well as a complimentary day pass (if not already a member) to ensure they have a chance to print using the screen they create in class.

None.
Materials:
All materials will be provided by the instructor, and a $15 materials fee is included in the class price.
Instructor Biography:
Erik Heumiller is a video editor and cartoonist who tinkers in every work area of the Asylum. Erik likes to collect hobbies and skills and rarely looks at anything without mentally deconstructing it to see how he can make it. His print experience comes from his years working in a T-shirt shop and he is currently working on comicbooks, art prints and building knickknacks for his print and design company.
