Learn how to construct a round storage basket in the manner of the western tribe of the Cherokee Indians. These "double-walled" baskets were originally woven from buckbrush, but we will be using natural and dyed round reed. Some of the eastern band of the Cherokee were relocated to Oklahoma in the 1830s. The western Cherokee developed their own unique style of basket weaving based on both tradition and innovation, with strong, functional designs. Your basket starts with a typical round reed base in natural colors. After the sides are woven leaving a loose top border, the spokes are brought back down on the outside of the woven basket. Here, patterns of color can be introduced. The basket is finished with a simple border at the foot, and measures approximately 8 inches in diameter by 8 inches deep. This class is appropriate for all levels of weaving experience.Instructions and Directions: Meets in the Barn. A list of equipment to bring will be sent. Please pay the class fee to the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary. Make out a separate check for $42 to cover the cost of materials, payable to Dianne Stanton, and bring it with you to the class. Limited to 12 participants.Registration is required.Register by mail: program registration form.
