Designed by William L. Rawn, the world renowned architect behind Tanglewood's Seiji Ozawa Hall, the recital hall is a model of optimal acoustic performance and architectural creativity, and continues to astound audiences and performers alike. Student and faculty recitals, master classes, chamber music concerts, guest artist performances, small staged productions and more fill the Recital Hall throughout the school year. The hall is also an important ensemble rehearsal space and home to various other Departmental and campus events and houses an American Steinway grand as well as a 9-foot Hamburg Steinway "D."
The Phillips Recital Hall seats close to 200 people and features a retractable sound curtain for acoustic adjustment, an upper-level mezzanine, audio and video recording equipment, performance lighting, and a Walcher tracker-action organ installed in a second-story loft. A full side of the Recital Hall features a windowed view of the Gordon Woods.
